Matt Jones

Matt played rugby union as a teenager and represented Cambridge at Rugby League as a winger. He found CrossFit in 2010 after looking to escape the world of Globo-Gyms and find somewhere he could train properly, drawn in by the functional lifts and intense conditioning that appealed to his rugby background.

In 2013 Matt placed 2nd in his weight category for 24kg Long Cycle in the GSU UK open (KB sport). In 2011 he took his CrossFit Level 1 and has began coaching at CrossFit Central London in February of that year. In Sept 2013 Matt left coaching to pursue a MA in Playwriting, returning to coach part-time at CrossFit Vauxhall (CFCL’s sister gym) towards the end of 2014, where he coaches the Kettlebell class, alongside working as a playwright and tutor.

As an athlete, Matt has come back to train from a number of set backs and injuries, and he believes the most important aspect of coaching is enabling athletes and clients to reach their potential in whatever they are pursuing. He does not believe that a single training methodology is perfect or wins out over others, it’s about using the right tools for the job and doing what you enjoy. (However, for the record, he thinks that Kettlebells are the best!!).

First WOD: The CFCL benchmark WOD of 500m row, 40 squats, 30 sit ups, 20 press ups and 10 pull ups. How hard could it be?

What is your guilty pleasure?: Life’s too short to feel guilty, and too boring without anything nice.

What is your favourite wind-down or relaxation?: Game of Thrones. Or Star Wars (though not the prequels, they don’t count).

What is your biggest achievement?: Getting back up for more when life wants you to stay down
