Leo Schotness

Leo was born in London, lived in Canada and recently moved back (hence the dodgy accent!). Her childhood sports were swimming and martial arts, then running, she went back to kickboxing and then after doing a Tough Mudder race 4 years ago, she found the closest thing on land….. CrossFit.

Leo fell in love with CrossFit and its huge emphasis on community and the weightlifting! She went to different areas of the US and gained her CrossFit Level 1, Olympic Weightlifting and Kettlebell certifications. Leo also spent two weeks with World Record Holder Laura Phelps-Sweatt learning Powerlifting and the Westside Barbell/ Conjugate method.

After taking part in a strongman competition in the summer and LOVING it, she now just wants to build up the community of Oly lifting and strength training.

First WOD: Ummmm I think it was a partner WOD I did in Maui and we were the last to finish…. In my defence I think we did too many reps or….. Everyone else cheated.

Favourite WOD: Bear complex. Without a doubt. No running involved or serious cardio, all barbell technique, it’s exhausting and a great benchmark. Plus, I like bears!

Least Favourite WOD: anything that involves wall balls or thrusters. I just have yet to find a way to love them.

What is your guilty pleasure? Tortilla chips!!! Oh and Ferrero Rocher. I DO NOT share those with anyone. They are my favourite.

What is your favourite wind-down or relaxation? Going to the cinema. I used to go every Sunday night, it’s my way to zone out. Also just lying in bed – not even sleeping, just being still and quiet.

What is your biggest achievement? So far everything I’ve done in my life. I never expected to be where I am today and have the opportunities that I have. Moving to Canada on my own for four years was a life lesson and a huge personal achievement. Also being accepted into a world of sport when I was never the sporty kid growing up and never thought I would be, so being part of such an amazing community across the world is amazing!

Leo currently holds the following qualifications and certifications:

  • CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
  • Kettlebell Instructor
  • CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting
